The Corporate Dominatrix: Six Roles to Play to Get Your Way at Work— Lisa Robyn
The word "dominatrix" conjures up a lot of racy images-whips, chains, leather, and the like. However, in Lisa Robyn's The Corporate Dominatrix: Six Roles to Play to Get Your Way at Work (Simon Spotlight Entertainment), the term refers to a smart approach women can adopt in order to thrive in the sadomasochistic world of business. Robyn takes S&M and the accompanying role play activities out of the bedroom (or the dungeon) and applies it to the highly stressful corporate world. A successful "corporate dominatrix" is someone who takes control over of her destiny.
A “corporate dominatrix” commands a balance between domination and submissiveness. Robyn emphasizes the need for a woman to assert herself in the workplace, but to also yield to authority when appropriate. This balance is what creates the opportunity for the dominatrix to rise in the ranks of her company. Women often get locked into one role or persona in the corporate world, but The Corporate Dominatrix aims to teach women how to take control of their careers. True power, Robyn suggests, does not emanate from an “it’s all about me” attitude, but instead allows a dominatrix to empower others. Lisa Robyn knows this balance all too well, as she is a veteran of the corporate world, having held executive positions in marketing and public relations.
Robyn outlines six critical roles that women can master as they steam full speed ahead in the workplace. These roles include the Goddess, the Queen, the Governess, the Amazon, the Nurse and the Schoolgirl. No role takes priority over another; each has its own kind of power.
Presented in a clear and accessible format, The Corporate Dominatrix contains useful charts, definitions and precise directions. There are questionnaires and quizzes that help women determine their strengths and weaknesses. William Parkhurst, author of How To Get Publicity and The Eloquent Executive, perfectly described Robyn’s plan: “If you’ve been held back by a corporate structure designed by men, The Corporate Dominatrix will show you, step-by-step, how to get the big bucks and the real power on your own terms…”
The Corporate Dominatrix has been receiving a great deal of media attention. In April, Lisa Robyn appeared on CNN’s “In the Money” segment to discuss the book and how to apply her theory in the workplace. Robyn also received glowing reviews from Publisher’s Weekly, The Globe and Mail, and Kirkus Reviews. She made her most recent appearances on NBC’s “Weekend Today” show, “Good Day New York”, and Business News Network to discuss Dominatrix.
Robyn is the president and founder of a marketing communications company. She has also been quoted in the New York Times, Publisher’s Weekly, BusinessWeek, and many other publications.
