An Afterlife, Fran Bartkowski

An Afterlife, a debut novel, follows a young couple, Ilya and Ruby, who first meet in a displaced persons camp in Germany after the War, both lone survivors of their families, as they travel to America to forge a future together.  Suffering from post-traumatic stress, they face challenges individually and as a couple as they struggle to adapt in a new culture.  Fran Bartkowski is the former Chair of the English Department at Rutgers University–Newark, where she teaches memoir, feminist theory and literary criticism.
