Lama Marut

The late former Buddhist monk, Lama Marut had an uncanny ability to articulate messages we want to hear but didn’t know until we hear them.  The front cover of his  BE NOBODY (Beyond Words/Atria, 2014) suggested:  “We’re all desperately trying to be somebody.  Maybe we’ve got it all wrong.”  What a relief!  We don’t have to try so hard to be special.  Maybe we can just be.  As Lisa Marie Selow, authormarutimages of A Rebel Chick Mystic’s Guide, puts it:  “Here’s some help in kicking your ego’s butt so that you can create a genuine spiritual life.”

With his edgy tone and radical perspective, Lama Marut followed up his award-winning book, A Spiritual Renegade’s Guide to the Good Life (Beyond Words/Atria, 2012) by calling on the biggest revolution of all:  the overthrow of our obsessive quest to be somebody.  Drawing on Buddhist thought, he shows how living an ethical life–a life of selflessness-is the key to true happiness and the foundation for founding a better world.  Marut provided action steps and simple meditations to achieve this goal.

Lama Marut earned a PhD in comparative religion before becoming an ordained Buddhist monk. He has taught at both Columbia University and the University of California and  he has served as a spiritual teacher to students around the world. His blog,, contains podcasts and YouTube videos of his lectures and discussions as well as his tour dates. His podcasts and videos contain his discussions on karma, happiness, and retraining the mind to find and practice healthier values.

Lama Marut passed away in October 2019.
