Rosalie Greenberg

Rosalie Greenberg “The kids in my practice are wonderful, sweet, creative,” says Rosalie Greenberg, M.D., a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist in private practice in Summit, New Jersey. Her kids just happen to have bipolar disorder, a disease that until recently was not thought to occur in children at all and is now one of the fastest growing categories in child psychiatry since ADHD.

Her kids-and their parents-are also in a great deal of pain. “My goal is to help adults recognize it’s not just that the kids are angry and screaming. What are they screaming about? If you know your child is hurting and if you can understand the biology behind it, it really empowers you as a parent, and helps you figure out what to do,” she says.

And that’s just what her book, BIPOLAR KIDS (DaCapo Lifelong) does. Dr. Greenberg not only gives parents, caregivers and educators a better understanding the disease itself but also provides concrete strategies for managing the disease. She uses real-life examples that illustrate exactly how the disease manifests itself in children, and gives tried-and-true advice about how to navigate the mood swings, how to really listen for what the child is expressing through his or her rages and frenetic behaviors, and how to successfully diagnose and treat the disease so that these children—her kids—can live a productive, happy life.

Publisher’s Weekly has said, “With this book in hand parents will become more aware of the intricacies of this complex condition. Greenberg walks parents through a multitude of ‘hidden symptoms.’ Although in and of themselves these clues don’t herald the condition, they are among the many fascinating links to pediatric bipolar disorder that Greenberg explores through current research and her own clinical experience.”

Although she treats children and adolescents with a wide range of psychiatric disorders; Dr. Greenberg specializes in the psychopharmacology of Pediatric Mood Disorders and Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. She received her MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed her adult Psychiatric Residency and Child Psychiatry Fellowship at Columbia. Dr. Greenberg was a Founding Board Member and Past President of the Juvenile Bipolar Research Foundation. She is a consultant in Psychiatry at Overlook Hospital in Summit, New Jersey. She is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. She is recognized as one of the Top Doctors in Child Psychiatry in the Castle Connelly NY Metropolitan Area guide {1999- 2005}, New York Magazine {2005-2006}, New Jersey Monthly Magazine {2005} and New Jersey Life Magazine {2006}.
