Sarkozy awards Legion of Honor to former Chief Rabbi of Israel

19 April, 2011

I’m proud and touched to announce that Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Meir Lau is the most recent recipient of the French Legion of Honor, the country’s highest accolade, for his efforts to promote interfaith dialogue. The ceremony took place on the anniversary of the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp, where the rabbi was imprisoned as a child during World War II.  We’re thrilled to announce that Rabbi Lau’s memoir will be released in English for the first time by Sterling Publishing in September. OUT OF THE DEPTHS: The Story of a Child of Buchenwald Who Returned Home at Last chronicles the extraordinary life of the boy who would become chief rabbi and meet with many world and religious leaders. He is currently President of Yad Vashem.
