Cold Hard Truth by Anne Greenwood Brown

Emmie O’Brien is a former good girl now on the fringe. She spent a crazy year involved with Nick, her mom’s drug dealer; after her arrest she was lucky to go back to her old life. But she’s haunted

by the choices she made—first, to be with Nick, and then later, to testify against him. Max Shepherd is a senior varsity hockey player with serious anger issues. His grief over the death of his girlfriend causes him to see injustice wherever he looks. When they meet in community service, Max is drawn to Emmie’s calm energy, but Emmie knows better than to get too close to anyone. When friends of Nick show up seeking revenge, Emmie is forced to come to terms with her past, while Max has to control his protective instincts. They must trust one another, especially when Emmie’s situation takes a dangerous turn.

“Brown’s latest is brimming with passion and suspense as Emmie and Max fight their demons of emotional abuse and anger management and become closer romantically. Reminiscent of Katie McGarry’s Say You’ll Remember Me (2018), the book reveals Emmie’s emotional abuse from Nick that she has to overcome as she tries to open her heart to Max. With a gripping plot from the beginning, Brown’s enticing novel reads from both Max’s and Emmie’s perspectives as they both slowly reveal their pasts.” — Booklist

Carol MasciolaThe Yearbook is Carol Masciola’s first published novel. The idea for the book came to her while leafing through her grandmother’s 1924 Charleston (W.Va) High School annual. Carol grew up in Vermilion, Ohio, an historic town on the banks of Lake Erie, with four sisters and a lot of woods and fields and freedom to wander around and daydream. She graduated from nearby Oberlin College with a degree in liberal arts and moved to Southern California, where she worked as a newspaper reporter for twelve years, learning journalism on the job but feeling restless.

At the Orange County Register, she won the PEN/West Literary Award in Journalism for a weeklong serial about a 77-year-old old man trying to take care of a baby by himself. Shortly after, she left the paper to marry a foreign correspondent from Spain who was covering Central America for Reuters News Service.  Since January of 2000, she has lived in Guatemala, Colombia, Jordan, London, Turkey, Spain and now lives in Geneva, Switzerland with her husband and their two sons. Carol began to write fiction after leaving journalism, first focusing on learning the screenwriting craft. She has completed six feature screenplays in genres from black comedy to Alpine ghost story.

Anne Greenwood Brown’s latest Young Adult novel, COLD HARD TRUTH (Albert Whitman), released April 2018. In this gritty love story, two teens who are court-ordered to participate in community work service fall in love while helping each other banish the very real and dangerous demons of their past. Her dark, paranormal mermaid trilogy LIES BENEATH, DEEP BETRAYAL, and PROMISE BOUND (Random House/ Delacorte) is set in the cold waters of Lake Superior, this Young Adult series is the story of revenge, forgiveness, and ultimately love and family. USA Today calls it “scary and spooky;” School Library Journal called it “fast paced and filled with twisty turns;” Kirkus Reviews called the finale “sophisticated” and “good entertainment.”

She is also the co-author of GIRL LAST SEEN (Albert Whitman), a contemporary Young Adult thriller about a missing YouTube sensation and plenty of suspects. Kirkus Reviews called GIRL LAST SEEN “endlessly twisty” and said that “this deliberate head trip will keep readers guessing until the very end. The kind of dark, wild ride that begs to be read in a single sitting.”  School Library Journal called it “a sexy, fascinating, fast-paced, and darkly dynamic mystery.” Booklist called it “exhilarating and filled with twists and turns.”

In addition to Anne’s YA novels, she also writes adult romance for Entangled Publishing under her pen name A. S. Green (check out SUMMER GIRL and WILD CHILD (coming June 2018)).

She has also published creative nonfiction, performed as part of the spoken-word tour, “Listen to Your Mother,” and contributed a chapter on “plotting” to the Writer’s Digest book AUTHOR UNBOXED.  She is a guest blogger on the popular writer’s website, Writer Unboxed, where she has received great response to her articles on writing first drafts and the art of revision (KICKING OUT A FAST FIRST DRAFT post).

If she’s not at home in Minnesota with her husband and their three above-average children, she’s probably on Lake Superior, waiting for something amazing to flash by.
